Book Cover First Impressions:

To me purple, screams romance and the necklace, appears to showcase a more traditional style that might be set-back to the late centuries.

About this book:

On the eve of her 18th birthday, Ashleigh Palmer is preparing to celebrate like any other 17 year old. With a close circle of good friends, a loving family and a sparkling academic record, her life seems enviable and above all: normal. Suddenly, her world is turned upside down as she realises that she may not be the typical young woman she thought she was. To the dismay of her family, her boyfriend Todd and her best friend Emma, she begins to change against her will. Her abilities go from top-standard to prodigal. Her strength, anger and lust know no bounds. Then the inhuman cravings begin – what is happening to her? Her mother holds the secret to her history which will change her life forever, but how and when will it reveal itself? How will she cope, and will she have to leave everyone she loves behind? A world which was once pure fantasy has become real…

My review:

Vampires and romance. My goodness, what a read. I was thrilled to read a copy of the manuscript that kept me entertained from start to end. I got so caught up in the characters and the interesting twists that it was a joy to read. Not to mention, this is a first time author!! I was incredibly impressed with the high caliber of work. The author, has done a terrific job of adding in the smooth pace at the beginning of the book to picking up the pace as we approach the middle and even faster towards the end. It is just like a movie, where the music changes to tell you, ‘something big is going to happen.’

And my goodness, do big things happen, from a young adult who has just turned 18, Ashley, doesn’t know that her birthday sets the change for her life and what I love about Ash, is she could be anyone. She is smart, yet friendly and a bit of a party-girl. This isn’t a too scary blood and gore vampire story, although, some snippets of blood has to be included, which was added in very smartly by the author. This is the more romantic/glamour side of vampires, that readers simply love.

So readers out there who love a good fantasy/romance/young adult story, add this to your next book to read. You can thank me later.

I just don’t understand, why me?

I looked at him in amazement. That this master of fashion could be so into me. “I just don’t understand, why me?”

He looked at me confused. Our eyes never left each other’s, as if nothing else was even important. “What do you mean?” he asked.

I shrugged. “I just do not understand. You could date anyone in your life. I bet you go to celebrity parties all the time. Surely you would rather …”

I suddenly stopped talking as I watched his confused expression turn into anger and then he actually laughed. “Do you think those fake, materialistic, fame hungry celebrities – just like me I might add – that I would want to be with them?”

“You are not fake. But in a way you do live in a completely different world to me. You practically live in a mansion, your cheapest car would be worth more than my apartment.”

Gerald cupped his hands against my face. “None of it means anything to me. I am an artist. Flamboyant, creative and don’t judge me for my way of life.”

I stared back at his intent longing gaze. “I am not judging you. I am just not sure if I am the one you really want.”

The King’s Shadow

21902188

Book Cover First Impressions:

Obviously a royal story. I enjoy historic literature of late so thought I would give it a go.

About this book:

It is 1483 and King Edward IV sits on England’s throne, but no king rules unchallenged. Often it is those closest to him who are the unexpected danger. When a king dies suddenly and without understandable cause, as Edward does, then rumour replaces fact – and Andrew Cobham is already working behind the scenes. When orphaned young, Tyballis was forced into marriage to her neighbour – a bully and a simpleton. When she runs away from her husband’s abuse, Tyballis meets Andrew Cobham, and gradually an uneasy alliance forms. This is a friendship which will take them in unusual directions and Tyballis soon becomes embroiled in Andrew’s work. Abduction, murder, intrigue and political subterfuge come to a climax as the country is thrown into confusion.

My review:

This was an interesting story and had me reading it wondering, asking questions, I was so intrigued. There were some gripping parts and some romantic parts, yet not the usual where the ‘man/woman falls head over heels for their love’, style romance. A different type of romance.

Based around the two central characters, Tyballis and Andrew. You get to witness Tyballis grow up into a woman who finally learns to look after herself and then charitably after others… although the others, a house full of petty criminals, all with different stories of their own and the mysterious Andrew Cobham who owns the run down house, disappears for weeks on end.

Lots of action and changing plots. This story is very interesting and different to the historic romance novels I generally read.

Message in a bottle

messageinb-680x1020

Book Cover First Impressions:

What caught my eye was the picture of the couple and what stopped me to pick-up the book was the author’s name.

About this book:

In a moment of desolation on a windswept beach, Garrett bottles his words of undying love for a lost woman, and throws them to the sea.

My dearest Catherine, I miss you my darling, as I always do, but today is particularly hard because the ocean has been singing to me, and the song is that of our life together . . .

But the bottle is picked up by Theresa, a mother with a shattered past, who feels unaccountably drawn to this lonely man. Who are this couple? What is their story? Beginning a search that will take her to a sunlit coastal town and an unexpected confrontation, it is a tale that resonates with everlasting love and the enduring promise of redemption.

My review:

I rarely read known authors, so I wanted to try one of Nicholas Sparks novels and because I enjoy his movies, The NoteBook and Safe Haven, I thought this book would have lots of emotional bursts and really like Safe Haven I was hoping for some unexpected moment that would last in my mind forever. With this novel, Message in a Bottle, the emotional bursts are less frequent however the unexpected moment did come and I was completely shocked. I won’t give it a way but my goodness, shocked, shocked, shocked. I like how Sparks went against the grain and did something in the story that really could have been a downfall for a great story, if written without thought. However, he delivered it well. You will understand what I mean when you read it. Will I read more of his books? Absolutely. I just hope to read them before the movie and then watch the book come to life on film!

Overall, with the reality of the world going through so much right now, it was lovely reading a novel, where there wasn’t up and down drama, it was romance, a build up of romance without too many couple fights in-between. Thank you Sparks, I appreciate the non-drama from this book.

The Accidental Husband

Book Cover First Impressions:

The image didn’t do much for me, but I knew with the title immediately that this was a romance novel. The Accidental Husband seemed more of a tale of how they met and fell in love, perhaps in a humourous way. I was intrigued and looking forward to reading this.

About this book:

Jane Green’s “The Accidental Husband” is a powerful story about two women connected by an earth-shattering secret. Maggie and Sylvie are perfect strangers: two very different women, living very different lives on opposite coasts. But they share more in common than they could ever imagine. Both women have beautiful children on the verge of flying the nest, the home they worked hard to build and always longed for, and a handsome and devoted husband they can’t believe belongs to them. Both women think their lives are seamlessly secure, but they couldn’t be more wrong…For each is about to discover a secret that will shake their world to the very core, throwing into doubt everything they ever thought they knew, and bringing Maggie and Sylvie together in the most unexpected way.

My review:

An interesting read. Quite shocking giving open-mouth moments. Green writes in viewpoints of specific main characters, to get an inside view on their thoughts and emotions. Starting with Sylvie, a Mum who is creative and carefree, then moving on to her daughter, Eve who is a normal beautiful teenager that lets her weight-loss stumble way out of control into a heartbreaking eating disorder.

After I read the first narrative chapter to introduce the story and the characters, I felt the story was being told rather then being read. Thankfully, once I continued reading I absolutely could not take my eyes away from the book. The story just grew and grew, the doubts about Sylvie’s relationship in my mind grew, as her own doubts grew and then whenever new character’s were introduced I suspected the worst and didn’t trust any of them until they were ruled out of deception. This may not make much sense if you haven’t read the book but that’s because the biggest secret is something I would love for you to discover on your own when you read it. Let’s just say this: The Accidental Husband was shocking, breath-taking, well-written and well-mastered and gripping.

Was their romance? You bet.

Was their scandal? Absolutely.

Will you enjoy the read? Yes!

Count Valieri’s Prisoner

About this book:

Kidnapped and held for ransom

Things like this just don’t happen to Maddie Lang! She grew up in a sleepy little English village, so never expected a research trip to Italy would end in her being held captive by the infamous Count Valieri.

His price? Her innocence!

Holding her under lock and key in his luxurious casa, the count is ready to strike a deal—one with an unconventional method of payment! As much as Maddie wills her traitorous body not to respond, his practiced touch sparks the first flickers of what could become dangerously addictive flames….

My review:

A very intriguing and interesting story that had me wondering who the count was and what was happening throughout.

Real surprises for the reader and great imagery throughout.

I enjoyed the heated romance brewing and was delighted with her final decision.

Entertaining and Intrigue.

Goddess of Love

First Impressions:

With a title of Goddess of Love, one would assume a romance novel. It was an easy, likeable read from the beginning, which had me keep turning the pages just as quick.

Goddess_of_Love

About this book:

The mythical Venus comes to life to help a nerdy woman find her inner goddess. Pea Chamberlain needs a makeover if she wants to attract über-sexy fireman Griffin DeAngelo at the firemen’s masked ball. And who could better coax Pea out of her pod than the Goddess of Love, whom she invokes in a moment of desperation? Venus works her magic on Pea, but who will help Venus when she falls for that same sexy fireman? Could Venus need a love makeover for herself? Check out the fireworks when the Goddess of Love unexpectedly loses her heart.

My review:

An interesting take on the Goddess of Love, a woman of seemingly super confidence to her sexuality and yet when it comes to dating and falling in love, she is just like every mortal woman. Innocent and completely terrified, especially when the risk of rejection is great.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and having Pea set as the main character (a mere mortal, who is struggling to find love) and calls on Venus the Goddess of Love to help her. Venus is a little eccentric, yet someone who is considered to be absolutely stunning, is no snob or mean cow, you can’t help but not love her. Pea, will have you fall in love and in laughter with her at the hilarious and completely awkward moments that she gets herself into. And the men, oh the good looking man candy, are set to have you voting for who will end up with who.

A laugh out loud romance that you will leave you wanting more.
